Tips for Protecting your Vision

If you’re interested in keeping sight problems away and reducing the risks of developing serious vision disorders with age, getting familiar with some tips for protecting your eyes and applying them regularly can be extremely useful.

You don’t have to be an eye care expert to know how important maintaining your eyes healthy is so if this problem concerns you, make sure you follow the tips below:

#1 Never touch your eyes with dirty hands

Protect your Eyesight - Don't Touch your Eyes!Touching your eyes with dirty hands favors the spreading of bacteria, increasing the risk of developing infections so make sure you wash your hands several times during the day and only touch your eyes when necessary.

Even if you don’t see them, there are lots of bacteria on your skin and their number increases whenever you use your hands for typing, cooking or cleaning the house. While this is perfectly normal, problems occur when you keep touching your eyes and eyelids without previously removing dirt from your hands. Of course this doesn’t mean you have to turn the washing activity into an obsessive one, but remember preventing is always easier than treating and to your best to follow this simple tip.

#2 Don’t use eye drops unless you’re recommended

The second piece of advice on the list of tips for protecting your eyes refers to eye drops, which are often recommended to people suffering from dry eyes syndrome. While these drops have the role of maintaining the proper moist and hydration of your ocular globes, they’re not necessary to healthy people so avoid using them unless your doctor recommended so.

A healthy eye produces tears which wash out bacteria and dust particles, keeping the exterior layers of the globes clean and free of harmful agents. While pathogens spreading on the cornea can trigger infections and irritations, so can eye drops used excessively.

#3 Change eye makeup as often as required

Lots of women do the mistake of using the same mascara, concealer or powder month after month but the truth is these products have to be changed every three to six months to prevent irritations and infections of the ocular globes. Each time you use these products, bacteria from your eyelashes pass on the brushes and applicators, as well as on the false eyelashes lots of women use without ever removing the makeup from them. So keep in mind, eye makeup products have to be replaced quite frequently to avoid vision problems.

#4 Quit smoking

It’s well known that smoking increases the risks of developing health problems such as macular degeneration, this condition being more frequent in regular smokers than in people who don’t have this vice. Macular degeneration is the most common cause of total vision loss worldwide, among people aged 65 and older, so try to eliminate this risk factor from your life by quitting smoking.

#5 Use proper lighting when working or reading

While only few people are aware of this problem, lighting plays a very important role in keeping sight disorders away and it can help tremendously when symptoms like blurred vision or eye pain occur. So this piece of advice surely deserves its place among the most important tips for protecting your eyes.

Whenever you feel your eyes become painful, red, itchy or dry, try to adjust the light in your working room and choose some bulbs that allow you to see everything clearly. Bright, full-spectrum lights are most recommended as they mimic daylight, which is considered the best for a healthy vision.

#6 Wear sunglasses whenever needed

You may find it hilarious but eyeglasses aren’t meant to be worn only during sunny days – they’re also ideal for keeping dirt particles, smoke and dust away from your eyes during rainy and windy days, so don’t hesitate using them whenever you need to protect your eyes from such pathogens.

Obviously, sunglasses are a must in any situation involving prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, as they protect the ocular globes from the harmful action of UV rays. To reduce the damaged produced by these rays, a hat can also be added as a chic yet very useful accessory.

And last on the list of tips for protecting your eyes healthy, make sure you do physical exercises or go for a walk at least 30 minutes a day, as keeping your weight under control and maintaining a good physical and psychical state is also very important for protecting your vision.
